About this camp

The Coriell Summer Experience for High Schoolers is a four-week paid internship program designed to immerse students in biomedical research and biobanking. Participants gain hands-on experience in advanced laboratory environments, learning techniques such as DNA extraction, chromosome characterization (karyotyping), and genetic disorder identification. The program offers rotations in various labs, including Production Laboratories for core biobank operations, the Stem Cell Lab for induced pluripotent stem cell exploration, and the Molecular Biology Lab for DNA extraction. Students work alongside professional scientists and mentors, conducting experiments, recording and analyzing data, and utilizing cutting-edge equipment. Beyond scientific skills, the program also focuses on professional development through seminars on resume-building, interviewing, public speaking, and career path exploration. The experience culminates in a formal presentation of their learned research to Coriell staff and peers.

What a typical day looks like

Each day, students begin with a lecture from a scientific staff member, followed by morning lab sessions involving observation, mini-projects, and data analysis. After lunch, labs shift to more independent work, allowing students to apply classroom learning to bench work.
