The BOLD (BioCONECT Oncology Leadership Development) Initiative is a unique week-long summer learning opportunity for high school students interested in cellular biology and the genetics of cancer, as well as the diverse careers within the field. Through an interactive experience, students will deepen their understanding of cancer's causes, diagnostic tools, treatment options, and current research, specifically within the context of breast cancer. Participants will also learn about risk reduction strategies and gain firsthand insight into various cancer-related professions by engaging with professionals at the Rutgers Cancer Institute. The program aims to improve science skills and increase awareness of cancer among high school students, offering a life-changing experience that broadens perspectives on career paths in a cancer setting beyond traditional roles like physicians and nurses to include pathology, genetic counseling, and oncology.
Students will engage in interactive activities focused on decoding cancer and understanding its effects on individuals, gaining a clear picture of cancer treatment and patient impact.
The ideal student is a high schooler entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in the Fall who has a strong interest in cellular biology, cancer genetics, and exploring diverse careers in oncology.
